As a vocalist and guitar player he was part of many of the top cajun musicial groups from the 1950s to the 2010s. His talents allowed him to travel throughout the world playing cajun music in countries like Russia, Canada, and all throughout Europe. Numerous times over he was nominated and won many awards with his most recent being his nomination of "Song of the Year" by the Cajun French Music Association for "The Old Black Pot".
He spent countless hours passing down his cajun heritage and wisdom of music by teaching young children who aspired to become and became cajun musicians. He was a man with a true heart, a great teacher and a legendary cajun musician.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Rosaline S. Maitre; children, Sheila Maitre Hector and husband Philip, Derrick Maitre and wife Jessica; grandchildren, Jada, Jodi, Fallon, Katelyn, McKenzie, Coltin, Callie; and great grandchildren, Rheese, Liam, and Baylen.
