152 Funeral services will be held Friday, August 14, 2015 at an 11:00 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial in St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church in Lafayette for Bertha T. Lavergne, age 63, Mrs. Joseph Lavergne, the former Bertha Trahan, who passed away Sunday, August 9, 2015 at her residence in Lafayette surrounded by her family and friends.

Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery in Lafayette. The Rev. Gary Schexnayder, pastor of St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church, will officiate at the services.

Mrs. Lavergne was a native of Esther and a resident of Lafayette for most of her life. She was employed for Auto Zone Area Distribution Center for eleven years until becoming disabled. She was a parishioner of St. Peter Roman Catholic Church and St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church where she was a member of the Bonne Mort Society, St. Peter Adoration Chapel since first opening and a suffering associate for the Community of Jesus Crucified. She will be remembered by the phrase "I love you more".

Bertha Trahan Lavergne was indeed a very special lady. She loved God, her husband Jay, and her three beautiful daughters Lana, Wendy and Dana with a fierce passion that only grew with the love that she had for her four grandchildren Colton, Mark, Marissa and Riley. She took great pleasure in her family and treasured every moment that she was able to spend with them. When she was able, Bertha loved cooking which was the source of many family memories. She also spent time caring for her cats and plants which kept her in touch with God's endless powers of creation.

Bertha's faith in God was truly an inspiration. While in the pain and struggles of her illness, she actually spent the majority of her time praying for others that were also ill, struggling with life, or for God's acceptance into heaven of those who have died. Her devout faith comforted her through her many physical challenges, but at times when her pain was unbearable she would become frustrated with her inability to focus on praying for others which was her real goal. Bertha received much inspiration from a healing prayer group led by Father Manny when she was able to attend. Her example of faith and devotion to God could be truly noted in her children and grandchildren from a young age and were easily visible by anyone who came in contact with her or her family.

Bertha's fun and down to earth disposition made her easily approachable (she never met a stranger). She made everyone she met feel comfortable with her warm smile and sincere concern she expressed in her interactions with you. Anyone who knew Bertha knows she was not always serious but instead loved to laugh and enjoyed a good joke. Her smile was infectious and her laughter touched your soul. Though it was hard at times, she still managed to get out a little giggle or a soft smile that left you wondering how she could gather the strength to smile while in such pain or discomfort. That's when you understood how strong and special her faith was and how truly beautiful and genuine her soul was. She fought the good fight!!!

Survivors include her husband of forty-eight years, Joseph D. "Jay" Lavergne of Lafayette; three daughters, Lana L. Johnson and her husband, Barney "Paul", of Denham Springs, Wendy L. Menard and her husband, Brian, of McDonough, GA and Dana L. Domec of Lafayette; four grandchildren, Colton Johnson, Mark Menard, Marissa Menard and Riley Domec; one brother, Rene Trahan, Jr. and his wife, Terri, of Forked Island; one half-sister, Marceline Trahan of Gonzales; and one sister-in-law, Lydia Hebert of Abbeville.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph Rene Trahan, Sr. and the former Elia Roger; two brothers, Joseph Ray Trahan and Joseph Elray Trahan; and one sister, Brenda T. d'Augereau.

Per her requests A Divine Mercy will be prayed at 3:00 p.m. and a Cursillo rosary will be prayed at 7:00 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home.

167 In late 1883, several of the children and grandchildren of James John & Penelope McKinnon Etheredge loaded up their belongings on horse and mule driven wagons and moved to the Ashford, Alabama area in what was then Henry County and is now Houston County.  The story told to my Uncle Terrell 'Buck' Etheridge is that according to his Daddy, Elonzo 'Lonnie' Etheredge, 5 of the sibling families were a part of this move.  The group included: Laura Etheredge, her Husband Redding Bryant Beasley and their 2 children; Henry H. 'Mack' Etheredge, his wife Alice Henrietta Lofton and their 2 children; Thomas Thower  Etheredge, his wife Sarah 'Sallie' Ragan and their son Elonzo 'Lonnie' Etheredge, (then 8 years old); Lewis A. 'Luly' Etheredge and his wife Idella Ragan; and Callie Etheredge, her husband George Washington Hicks and their oldest child.  This move also included Sarah 'Sallie' Ragan's sister, Eliza Elizabeth Ragan, her husband Daniel Lafayette Moody and several of their oldest children.  Uncle 'Buck' says 'Lonnie' was only 8 years old at the time, but often talked about the childhood adventure of the move.  It was also told by Lonnie that Sarah's sister, Rebecca Ann 'Becky' Ragan, her husband Seaborn Jefferson Brown and their oldest children had moved to Henry County not long before this group did.

Census records also reflect and the story has been passed down by my Granddaddy, Clifford Etheridge, my Daddy, Henry Ethridge, and my Stepmom, Irene Ethridge, that 2 of the older Etheredge siblings made a similar move to Baker County, Georgia, not long after the Civil War.  This included William Arthur Etheredge, his wife Mary Jane Sanders (Irene's grandparents) and their children, along with John Franklin Etheredge, his wife Sarah Angeline Sanders and their children.  Note that these two brothers married sisters, making their children what is referred to as double first cousins, which was a common occurrence since the Civil War in many families.  There are several of these cases in my family history in the Etheredge, Pate, and Blalock lines.

My Daddy, Henry and my Stepmom, Irene discovered they were cousins, not long after they were married in 1976.  The story goes that once they were discussing the family history with my Granddaddy, Clifford Etheridge and Irene shared with him that her Granddaddy, William Arthur Etheredge had lost his leg while fighting in the Civil War.  Cliff could also remember his Granddaddy, Thomas Thrower Etheredge telling the story of his brother, William Arthur, losing his leg in the War.  That means Irene and Cliff are 2nd cousins, making Irene and Henry 2nd cousins, 1x removed.

Was given a gold-headed cane in 1743 by a J. H. Davis; at last report it was owned by one of his descendants,
Mr. Dillon Culver of Houston, TX

It is assumed that he had at least two, possibly three, wives because of the wide range in the ages of his children

Feb 8, 1770 - George Culver sold to John Wainright, 64 acres of land called "Bailey's Chance" and 50 acres called
"Drumany" for 55 pounds current money, in hand paid

Will - Sussex Co., DE - dated Feb 28, 1782, probated Dec 30, 1782
George Culver Jr., son, executor
Heirs: John Culver, Jesse Culver, Nathan Culver, Isaac Culver, Salathiel Culver, William Culver, George Culver Jr., sons

George Culver Jr, the son of George Culver Sr and Martha Calloway, was born in Somerset Co MD about 1760. On 19 Mar 1784 after the death of their father, George's brothers, William 16 and Salathael 14, asked the court to appoint George as their guardian.

About 1790, George along with brothers Nathan, Salathael, and their first cousin, Joshua Joseph Culver (son of Aaron Culver) moved to Hancock Co GA. After arriving in Hancock Co, George married Elizabeth Ellis who had also recently moved from Delaware. They had eleven children. All of their children were born in Hancock Co. It is possible that they traveled to Georgia together.

The Smyrna Methodist Church was consittuted in 1797. Members listed were Philip and Anna Vinson Jackson, John Vinson - Lay Exhorter, Thomas Jackson, C. L., then Nathan, George, Levin, and Hardy Culver, N., Nancy Jackson, Eliza, and Mary Culver, Margaret and Elizabeth Vinson. (137)

In the 1812 Hancock Co GA list of taxable property for Capt Newsome's District, George owns the following: 6 negroes, 250 acres of #3 land in Hancock Co on Beaver Dam adjoining Capt Newsome. The land was originally granted to George. (104)

In the list of land holdings in 1825 Hancock Co GA, George Culver owns 522 acres in Hancock Co located on Lake Ogeechee. His land was located next to the Atkinson property.

NOTES:
Children in order named in Geo Sr's will. Wife/wives not known. Wm & Salathael [age 14] were minors in 1784 when Geo Sr died. Geo jr named their guardian. Geo SR received a gold headed cane in 1743 from J.H. Davis. From the fact that he signed his names in MD & GA and and the others signed by mark, the author (Spillers) thought Nathan the child of a different
mother. Nathan named as 3d son of Geo was a soldier in Amer Rev or at least rendered service ("by your bond Dr. to confiscated property sold, payable on or before Jan 1st to Wm McBride, Nathan Culver & Wm Dashiell, 1406 pounds -5 shillings. Nathan bought "Collins Adventure" from Nehemiah King in 21 Jun 1780.

Nathan's wife Nancy Powers probate papers identifies the heirs. Nathan Geo jr & Salathael all moved to Hancock Co GA before 1790, as did "their 1st cousin Joshua J(oseph?) son of Aaron. All of Geo jr's children were born in GA (no GA census 1790, 1800, 1810 destroyed in 1812). More on this line in book. It is supposed that Geo SR's wife was Martha as each of the 3 sons who came to GA named a dau Martha. The name of Geo SRs last wife may have been Calloway. He may have had as many as three wives.

pg 125 (Spillers) Georgetown, DE. C. No 3, Mar 19, 1784. Orphans Court "Came into court, William Culver, a minor son of George culver dec'd, and prayed admittance to choose for his guardian, his brother, George Culver, of who this court approves and the said George Culver being present, accepts the trust and prayed bond with Aaron Culver, Surety. Same date. Came (pg 126) into court, George Culver and made known to the court that George Culver, late of Sussex Co, Dec'd, did not in his lifetime dispose of the guardianship of his son, Salathael Culver, a minor, and 14 years of age, and prayed this court to approve some person to be guardian to said minor person and his estate during his minority, or until he arrives at age to choose for himself, whereupon the court appointed the said George Culver, guardian to said minor, and he being present accepts the trust and prayed bond with Aaron Culver, Surety.

188 "Cecil J. Picard", the third longest serving State Superintendent of Education in Louisiana history, and the catalyst for many nationally recognized educational initiatives including Louisiana's Accountability Program and the LA 4 Pre-K initiative, has died. He was 69 years-old.

Picard died Thursday afternoon, February 15, 2007, from complications from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or ALS at Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center. His loving wife and family were by his side.

Picard began his life on January 1, 1938 in Maurice, Louisiana, the son of Romain and Evangeline. He grew up on the grounds of Maurice High School where his father served as principal. Picard often recounted peering into the school's windows as a boy, too young to attend classes, curious to see what the teachers and students were doing inside. Picard later recalled thinking that he never wanted to follow in his father's footsteps as an educator, knowing the difficult realities of leading a school.

Despite his misgivings, Picard graduated from Maurice High School and set off to achieve a degree in Upper Elementary Education from Southwestern Louisiana Institute, which later became the University of Southwestern Louisiana and then the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. He also earned a Master of Arts degree in Administration and Supervision from Sam Houston State Teachers College in Huntsville, Texas. In 1959, Picard began his educational career as a teacher at LeBlanc Elementary School in Erath, Louisiana. He became a teacher and coach at Maurice High School in 1962; but upon his father's death in 1969, he stepped into his father's position as principal and leader of the school.

Picard always believed that education needed to be a top priority in Louisiana, but he knew if he wanted to have an impact, he would have to leave the schoolhouse for the statehouse to accomplish his goals. So, in 1976 he was elected to the Louisiana House of Representatives. In 1979, he was elected to the Louisiana Senate serving a combined 20 years as a legislator. He was a long-time member and former chairman of the Senate Committee on Education. He also served as Chairman of the Committee on Revenue and Fiscal Affairs and the Committee on Senate and Governmental Affairs.

As a member of the Senate, Picard was lead author of more than 50 pieces of legislation and championed numerous education reform initiatives aimed at improving education in Louisiana, including the Educational Employees Professional Improvement Program (1980), the law requiring mandatory kindergarten (1984), the Children First Act (1988) and the law creating Louisiana's first Early Childhood Opportunity Program (1992).

Picard became State Superintendent of Education in 1996, making him the third longest serving superintendent in Louisiana history, behind Thomas H. Harris (1908-40) and Shelby M. Jackson (1948-64). Picard worked closely with 5 governors and 8 administrations, including those of Governors Edwin Edwards, Dave Treen, Buddy Roemer, Mike Foster and Kathleen Babineaux Blanco. He was scheduled to retire effective May 1, 2007.

During his tenure as the state's top education leader, Picard transformed Louisiana from one of the worst performing states academically, to one of the nation's leaders in education reform. Picard led the way in developing Louisiana's Accountability Program that is currently ranked number one in the nation by Education Week Magazine. Under his leadership, Louisiana was also ranked number one in the country for its efforts to improve teacher quality and has shown improvement in almost every national indicator available, including ACT scores, NAEP tests, The Iowa Tests and the state's LEAP and Graduation Exit Exams. After Hurricane Katrina, Picard greatly assisted impacted school systems in their recovery efforts, especially in New Orleans. However, Picard considered his most important contribution to be the creation of Louisiana's pre-K program for at-risk students, LA 4 which is now a model for the nation in early childhood education.

Although education was his lifelong endeavor, his happiness came from spending time with his family, (particularly his four grandchildren) duck hunting with his friends and sons, and traveling the world with his wife. He had an affinity for sharing good wine and cigars with his friends. He also loved thoroughbred horse racing, a passion passed on to his children and grandchildren.

Picard was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in May of 2005. He aggressively battled the disease since his diagnosis including participating in experimental drug trials in hopes of prolonging his health.

Visitation will be held at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Maurice, Louisiana from 6:30 PM until 10:00 PM on Sunday, February 18, 2007. 194 "Rendez vous des Cajun" lost a loyal viewer on Monday, May 1, 2017. Joseph Venance (JV) Landry, Jr, age 87, passed away at his home in Milton, LA. He was surrounded by his family, who were his loving caregivers for many years.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 5, 2017, at a 10:00 am Mass of Christian Burial at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Milton. Reverend William Schambough, Pastor, will be Celebrant of the Funeral Mass. Interment will follow in the St. Joseph Cemetery. Musical selections will be performed by Soloist, Jodi Bollich.

JV was a kind, charming man who never met a stranger. His family meant everything to him. If he had his way, his home would have been "The Landry Compound".
